Teeth Restoration in Stafford County, VA
Restorations that are used to repair teeth with mild to moderate decay. Also used to restore cracked and fractured teeth that are not damaged enough to be treated using crowns.
Inlays and Onlays are used if an old filling either needs to be removed or completely replaced. Inlays, similarly to fillings, fits inside of the cusp tips (or top edges) of one’s tooth. Onlays are more extensive, extending over the cusps.
Inlay and onlay applications is a two-appointment treatment, with each averaging about 1 hour in duration. In the first appointment (which can last longer than an hour due to prep) once the local anesthesia is administered, the dentist will remove old fillings and remove decay and damage by drilling the affected tooth. An impression will then be taken and used to create a new inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays are typically made out of porcelain, but they can also be made from gold or composite resin. During the second appointment the temporary restoration is removed and the newly created inlay or onlay is cemented into its place once it is fitted to the tooth. Once the new inlay or onlay is in place, the patient will walk out with a natural and uniformed appearance.
There may be slight discomfort post-procedure with tissue sensitivity and soreness around the new inlay or onlay, but should subside after a few days. Any discomfort can be easily treated with over-the-counter pain medication.
